If you are in an area with a heavy undercurrent, a spinner might be a great option, as it will be in constant motion and draw the attention of some of your target species more effectively.
The best way to learn about anything is through trial and error, but you can get a head start by joining a charter excursion or two and watching which deep sea fishing lures work best for what fish and in what waters.
